About:
The Maury River might be one of the most interesting places I have fished in Virginia. Set deep in the middle of gorge, called Goshen’s Pass, this river looks just like something I imagine I would see in Colorado. It is just not a typical Virginia River, even the peaks of the mountains in Goshen’s Pass look like something from the Rockies.
Fishing here can be both difficult and easy. When the water is high, I would recommend swinging a weighted streamer with a lot of flash and stripping it in fast. When the water is low, and you can wade more than just the banks, caddis nymph fishing is the way to go. Almost every cast, you will get a cased caddis latched on to your hook.
Be very careful as you fish the Maury, it is very deceptive; one second it will go from one inch water, then the next the water will be over your head. Watch the water color, look for deep green colors, this will indicate deep pools.
I personally would recommend going to Maury at least once, just check on the weather prior to going there. You do not want to fish this river when the water is high.
Additional Notes: Parking is limited to pull of spots a long a very busy road.
